The Power of Intention —A Teacher's Workshop at Sea
Join authors Patricia Rose Upczak and Anne Garcia on this Alaskan trip of a lifetime!
Explore your hidden talents and creativity not only as a teacher, but as a curious, joyful student of life. Our intention is to provide a venue in which new and veteran teachers can rethink teaching and how they might be able to incorporate their own creativity and life experiences into their own teaching to foster happiness, interest and a sense that learning is something we can cherish for our whole lives. Our Alaskan cruise expands your mind and heart in a way that nothing else can. In addition to exploring your own teaching and creativity you will experience the magic only Alaska brings when baring witness to the splash of whale tails on the frosty sea, soaring eagles in deep blue skies and lumbering bears that roam the waters, glaciers and mountains of the Inside Passage.
Take time to explore your talents, passions and creativity in an environment that inspires and rejuvenates. You’ll be amazed at the clarity you can achieve just by taking time to participate and reflect in your work and your life. You may never look at education in the same way again.
A Teacher's Workshop at Sea - Creative Inspiration
The workshop sessions will work with teachers or teachers in training to help them find a balance between the high stakes testing environment and learning based on both teacher and student interests. They are separated into two parts. The first part given by Patricia Upczak and focuses on becoming a “Happy Teacher.” Students will receive a copy of her book Happy Teachers, Happy Students: The Power of Intention, and a journal that accompanies the text. The workshop will guide the participants through a number of different ways in which teachers can access student thinking and learning in creative and fun ways. The intent is to develop a solid core of well-being, happiness and a source of creativity that can then be transferred to student learning.
The second part of the workshop focuses on how to use inquiry-based learning and comprehension strategy work to engage students in school. Anne Garcia will work with participants on how to plan and manage a classroom that focuses on inquiry as a tool for exploring and learning. She will also include one session on how to scaffold teaching for new learners of English and offer one session on bilingual instruction.
Patricia Rose Upczak
Patricia taught in a large public school in Boulder, Colorado for almost 25 years. She loved her job. She taught very bright learning disabled students in a Resource Room setting usually one period a day. She helped them develop their learning styles. Often they discovered for the first time what they were really good at, instead of whatthey couldn’t do well. Early on Patricia saw the potential and talent in all of her students and tried to help them see themselves the way she saw them. Ms. Upczak watched the teachers around her work long hours, buy supplies with their own money, go to students athletic events, singing concerts, and plays all on their own time. Rarely did they do these things because someone told them they had to. Most teachers dedicate their lives to helping children of all ages learn not just to read, write and do math, but explore the world with curiosity and joy. Ms. Upczak was very lucky to be one of those teachers. Over the years she taught a variety of seminars that explored not just learning styles, but also communicating styles and teaching styles and how that impacts the classroom environment. Ms. Upczak has followed the continuing research of the brain and how it can be used in the classroom. She also has developed strategies from experts like Tony Buzan and Edward De Bono that acce her students learning amazingly. She has given presentations at many conferences around the country for over 20 years. Her teaching credentials cover K- through 12th grade, and she has taught at all levels with joy, and passion. She now writes books, teaches seminars and plays with grandchildren.
